Reyndeer Games

You might have been waiting for me to talk about this one. Well, here it finally is! Another true Point-and-Click-Adventure game classic! Or well... at least now it is! This beauty was originally released by LucasArts in 1998 and the remastered version was released in the beginning of 2015. Grim Fandango, a game that knows how to combine the Dia de los Muertos vibe with art deco and film noir.

Intro

Our main character is called Manuel "Manny" Calavera, who works as a travel agent for the Department of Death (DoD) in the land of the dead. The game is focused on the journey from the eighth to the ninth underworld, which they have to reach before the dead can rest in peace. Due his (unknown) sins, Manny is stuck in the eighth underworld and must work as a reaper (travel agent) on commission, to pay off his debt.

Grim Fandango

The job of the DoD travel agents is offer the newly deceased souls, luxury travel packages to the ninth underworld according to how they lived their lives. And the game begins with Manny's newest client being unable to afford better ways to travel across the eighth underworld plains. He realizes with such clients he will never be able to pay off his debt and rest in peace. Suddenly, he receives info about a massive poisoning, this could be the big break Manny needs, but he has to deal with his rival Domino "Dom" Hurley first.

To get the best client, Manny has to beat Dom to it and get there first. But before he's got the chance to leave, he learns from a mechanic in the garage that someone conveniently dismissed Manny's driver. The mechanic is called Glottis and is an elemental spirit summoned up from the Land of the Dead itself and given one purpose, one skill, one desire... TO DRIVE. So Manny persuades Glottis to become his new driver!

Grim Fandango

After a little boost to Manny's car, Glottis manages to get them at the poisoning first and Manny picks up a new client, She's a saintlike woman called, Mecedes "Meche" Colomar, who died of the chicken pox.

Back at his office, Manny fires up his computer to offer his client the best travel option there is: A golden ticket for the number nine! "The number nine is a top of the line express train" that takes only four minutes to reach the ninth underworld instead of four years. Unfortunately according to the records she cannot afford any luxury travel to her eternal rest.

Manny starts suspecting something is off, since he was absolutely certain the client should've gone on the number nine. And so his investigation begins...

What to expect?

A very entertaining game filled with sarcasm and witty comments! The remastered version added some high quality textures, and improved lighting, but the most important improvement is the gameplay itself. Originally Grim Fandango had to be played by keyboard only, now it has that true P&C vibe!

Give me a clue

The puzzles vary from easy to hard and sometimes they can be really frustrating. But it's no reason to miss out on this wonderful game! Because... you can always look for a walkthrough... right?

Graphics

The game's unique combination of film noir, art deco interiors and Dia de los Muertos figures, comes even more to it's right with the carefully chosen voice overs for each character and the music for each setting and event. The old 3D style has been kept and I can say I enjoyed every bit of its nostalgic feel.
